APPLAUSE LINE: remark calculated to win a favorable response from an audience.
Before the speakers began their talks at the recent Ohio Democratic Party State Dinner, I asked, "Anybody want to bet how many times they mention last night's Ohio State game to guarantee applause?"
Nobody took my bet but it was actually FIVE times. Even the out-of-state Commonwealth of Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, the Keynote Speaker, resorted to that sure-fire grab for applause.
I am usually a person who initiates applause for deserving speakers, but I dislike those oh-so-obvious ploys. I quipped, "Maybe the flag and apple pie will be next!"
